Broken Silences, Rising Flames

Imagine the narrow alleys of Benua village in the Morwa block of Samastipur district, Bihar, where the blanket of poverty was so thin that a daughter's dreams could not fit beneath it. Priyanka Kumari—the beloved daughter of Mr. Chandan Ram and Mrs. Baby Devi—was part of that very society where putting a full stop to education due to financial hardship and decorating a 'palanquin' at a young age was considered a daughter's destiny. When her family was preparing for her marriage, Priyanka did what was unimaginable in that environment—she broke the chains of 'silence' and raised her voice for her rights. She clearly expressed that she wanted education, not marriage.
Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS), village-level platforms, and the local study hub provided a strong foundation for Priyanka's courage. After several rounds of dialogue and intensive discussions with the family, her parents agreed to postpone the marriage and allow her to continue her education. Priyanka studied at the center with firm determination and successfully passed her matriculation examination. But this was only a victory for her personal struggle; the real revolution was yet to come.
From a Personal Rebellion to the 'Educational Flight' of 100 Daughters: Priyanka did not stop after her own victory. She held the hands of more than 100 adolescent girls who stood at the same threshold of pressure and child marriage where she once stood. Through regular meetings, family dialogues, and collective leadership, Priyanka rescued all 100 girls from the clutches of child marriage and connected them to Intermediate education. Today, Priyanka serves as the Block Coordinator of the 'Savitribai Phule Kishori Club,' representing the face of leadership that works to bring dropout girls back to school, connect them with higher education, and refine their mental health and leadership skills.

Impact Changing Social Mindsets: Priyanka’s leadership is not limited to books. This group operates a 'Pad ATM' to ensure menstrual safety and dignity, which has sparked open discussions on gender discrimination in the village and strengthened girls’ participation in mainstream education. Priyanka says, "I chose education for myself, and now I want every girl to have this right and the same opportunity to make that choice."

Today, Priyanka dreams of becoming a doctor to serve the marginalized who lack access to medical treatment. This story is not just about one girl's resistance; it is the saga of the rise of a 'powerful grassroots leader' who has transformed the spark of her personal resistance, dialogue, and collective leadership into a torch of lasting social change. We are not just placing books in the hands of thousands of daughters like Priyanka, but the confidence and power that are clearing the path of justice and equality for future generations.
